The Story
Deceptively simple - and very effective.
“After ten years with a beautiful Contessa 32, the time at last came to trade classic lines and performance for comfort. It was with much relish that we looked forward to our first night out on the mooring in our lovely spacious new boat - with a nice big comfy aft cabin .
It was a lovely evening – clear skies and a light breeze, just enough to raise wavelets on the fetch across Fareham Creek. A peaceful night being rocked gently to sleep was in prospect…
No chance.
Settling down in the cozy cabin, all was well - until the breeze picked up, just a little.
It started.: the sound of waves slapping against the hull.
Bang… bang… bang… bang…
...earplugs were deployed.
Not enough. We removed to the forepeak.
Something had to be done.
Over the coming weeks I looked around for something to stop the dreaded noise, but couldn’t find anything elegant, simple, compact and effective. I did find several other people who had been driven out of their stern cabins, though.
So a few experiments: weighted skirts round the hull, wedges to fill in the gap, pads to absorb the noise... no success: too cumbersome, too difficult to rig, or just plain didn't fix the problem.
Then it occurred to me that I should look at the cause, not the symptom: look at the waves, not the hull. So I did. And the solution became clear.
One more experiment and at last a miracle: an uncanny quiet settled on the boat...
The SlapStopper was born: no assembly or inflating, small enough to fold up into a guardrail bag and easy to deploy from the deck. Even warm and comfy to stand on for a long trick at the helm!
More than that, though: the SlapStopper has worked reliably and effectively in all the conditions we've experienced on our mooring: from flat calm with motor boats passing by at one extreme, through to lurching about in a gale at the other.”
Simple.
So if you're bothered by wave slap noise, take a look around.
